What comes to your mind when you think of British food? Steak and Kidney Pie? Sausage and Mash? Bubble and Squeak? Haggis? Those are some of
the best dishes representing the heritage and traditions of Great Britain, with
recipes ranging from traditional English, Scottish, Irish, and Welsh dishes.
I am very certain that most of you have heard about Britain’s most famous fast food: Fish and Chips. Very few people can resist the mouth-watering dish, a combination of moist white fish in crisp golden batter, served with a generous portion of hot chips. It is estimated that over 230 million fired fish takeaways are sold in Britain annually, according to NPD Crest market research, and we all have our own preferences of how we like to eat it. Cod or haddock? Salt and vinegar or tomato ketchup? Mushy peas? For many of us, a trip to a chippy (a fish and chip shop) brings back memories of a seaside holiday or a late-night supper on the way home from the pub. Many of us still remember eating fish and chips wrapped in a newspaper, which some pubs still do!!
British food has traditionally been based on beef, lamb, pork, chicken and fish and generally served with potatoes and one other vegetable. However, globalisation resulted in vast amounts of foods and recipes being moved around the world, incorporating them into local eating patterns. Therefore, you should not be surprised to hear that it is not Fish and Chips that is the most popular dish in British restaurants anymore. Chicken Tikka Masala quickly became our all-time no. 1 dish, currently holding a special place in our hearts (or our stomachs, to be more accurate).
Although the origin of the dish in unclear, it is believed that Chicken Tikka Masala was invented in a London curry house, and not in India. The dish consists of a lot of ingredients, seventeen to be precise, predominantly roasted chunks of chicken in a creamy, spicy sauce. Chicken Tikka is an Indian dish, while the Masala sauce was added to satisfy the desire of British people to have their meat served with gravy. Chicken Tikka Masala has been called ‘a true British national dish’, and rapidly became served in restaurants around the world.
Therefore, do not be afraid of the British cuisine! British cuisine has always been multicultural, substantial, yet simple, but wholesome. We do have a wide and varied cuisine in Britain today, in fact, some of the best chefs now come from Britain! In London, especially, not only you can experiment with the best of the British, but the best of the world, including distinct ethnic cuisines such as Chinese, Indian, French, Italian and Greek restaurants. So, now all you need to do is to taste it, and I am sure you will fall in love with the great British cuisine, just like I did.
